Social Skills Therapy
Thomas Merriman, joined our practice January 1, 2014 as an Educational Consultant and specializes in Individualized and Group Social Skills Therapy. Dr. Merriman is a Certified Autism Specialist, an SBEC Professional School Counselor, a Board Certified Professional Counselor, Certified Relationship Specialist, and a Diplomate and Fellow of the American Psychotherapy Association. He has also served on the Editorial Board of the A.P.A., where he contributed and peer reviewed professional articles. Tom provides Social Skills Training for children, adolescents, and adults with an identified social skills deficit, often (but not necessarily) associated with Autism Spectrum Disorder or ADHD. This has been his exclusive therapeutic focus for nearly fifteen years. His work is often associated with life transitions, relational conflict and development, managing the challenges of early adult life, and the ability to read and convey social cues.
Tom also provides academic services to students with social challenges seeking to identify “good fit” academic opportunities in higher education, or to repair unsuccessful ones. He is available for help with a wide variety of school related needs, usually with an emphasis on social issues. He advises parents and young adults in methods of navigating school and university systems, attends campus meetings, and even facilitates private campus visits for students who need extra time and direction in their choice of a campus.
Prior to joining SJ&A as an Educational Consultant, Tom owned and operated The Phaedrus Group (a team of therapists whose primary focus was ASD), and Merriman Consulting (which provided a wide variety of therapists for Texana MHMRA). He worked as a school counselor for Katy ISD, and as a crisis counselor for the Harris County Department of Education. Tom’s early career was spent in Education, mostly at the Post-Secondary level. He has either taught or counseled at every level from Pre-K through Doctoral. He is SBEC certified in several professional and academic fields including Professional School Counseling, and holds ten undergraduate and graduate majors or minors. His therapeutic temperament is generally quiet and low key. Tom insists that students learn best in a calm, welcoming, and affirming environment.
In 2016 and 2017, Tom received the Best of Katy awards for Best Therapy Services and Best Counseling Services (along with other members of the SJ&A team). The practice was also recognized for Best Psychiatric Services.
