Thomas C. Merriman, Ed.D.
Thomas Merriman, Ed.D. joined our practice January 1, 2014 and specializes in Individualized Social Skills Therapy. Dr. Merriman is an SBEC Professional School Counselor, A.P.A. Board Certified Professional Counselor, A.P.A. Certified Relationship Specialist, a Diplomat and Fellow of the American Psychotherapy Association. He also serves on the Editorial Board of the A.P.A., where he contributes and peer reviews professional articles.
Tom provides Social Skills Training for children, adolescents, and adults with an identified social skills deficit, often (but not necessarily) associated with Autism Spectrum Disorder or ADHD. This has been his exclusive therapeutic focus for over ten years. His work is often associated with life transitions, relational conflict and development, managing the challenges of early adult life, and the ability to read and convey social cues.
Prior to joining SJ&A as a Social Skills Therapist, Tom owned and operated The Phaedrus Group (a team of therapists whose primary focus was ASD), and Merriman Consulting (which provided a wide variety of therapists for Texana MHMRA). He worked as a school counselor for Katy ISD, and as a crisis counselor for the Harris County Department of Education.
Tom’s early career was spent in Education, mostly at the Post-Secondary level. He has either taught or counseled at every level from Pre-K through Post-Doctoral. He is SBEC certified in several fields including Professional School Counseling, and holds ten under graduate and graduate majors or minors. That said, his therapeutic temperament is generally quiet and low key. Tom insists that students learn best in a calm, welcoming, and affirming environment.
In 2016 and 2017, Tom received the Best of Katy awards for Best Therapy Services and Best Counseling Services (along with other members of the SJ&A team). The practice was also recognized for Best Psychiatric Services.
